The mission and vision of Code Girls United is to expand the future career opportunities of 4th – 8th grade girls through hands-on experiences in coding, technology, and business and to ensure that women play a key role in economic growth through the use of their technology and business skills. They provide an opportunity for girls to see if they like working with technology, and provide the opportunity to try it out. Girls, 4th – 8th grade, meet weekly after school throughout the year. The first half of the year involves learning the basics of Computer Science. The second half of the year, the girls split into teams to choose a service project, then complete a business case and then code their app. The girls then compete in local, country, and international competitions. During the mid-1990s, 35% of computer science jobs were filled by women. Now, almost 30 years later, only 24% of computer science jobs are filled by women. According to the American Association of University Women, this trend can be reversed by removing negative connotations around women in computer science and engaging young girls at the elementary level. Code Girls United leads young girls to open doors to their own futures. They teach coding and practical business skills to build self-confidence and lead to high-tech, high paying careers. Computer science education is not a K-12 educational requirement in the state of Montana. Typically, school districts in the most populated areas have implemented some sort of STEM program, but the rural and tribal areas have been left behind and don’t have access to these opportunities or female mentorship. For the schools that do offer High School Computer Science programs, girls are often self-selecting out of these types of programs to date, there has never been a girl in Montana who has taken the AP Computer Science test, which they aim to change.
Kalenga Augustine (K.A.) Mulenga loves writing children’s books! His mission is to write books that have an important life lesson in an easy yet fun way, thus giving parents a helping hand in teaching and nurturing their children. With colourful illustrations and a wide range of different and diverse characters, ranging from Whales to Leopards. Kalenga aims to inspire readers to do the right thing. Kalenga lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, with his wife, his 2 daughters, his son and his 4 dogs (2 Labradors and 2 Maltese Crosses). He loves reading, and is an avid soccer fan. Writing runs in his blood, as his late father was a journalist and the first black editor of the Zambia Daily Mail, and his late brother was a poet. Kalenga started writing when he was still in the 3rd Grade. His stories won a few competitions at his school, and winning made him a voracious reader. Reading just urged him to write more! Fast-forward to 2020 and after an inspirational "a-ha" moment, he started writing again and to date has written 21 children's picture books, has a middle-grade novel in the works, and a memoir waiting to be published. Kalenga’s mission is to create stories which inspire and teach children important life lessons. He also wants to help parents to teach their children important life lessons. He wants his books to bring families and people together, for adults (teachers, parents, etc.) to enjoy the stories while reading to the children. For the children that can read on their own, to share his stories with their friends. He also wants to share his work, not just in South Africa, but all over the world, and would love for his stories to be translated into different languages, so that not only the English-speaking countries can enjoy and benefit from them, but the children of the world. He would like his books to help children with phonics and to get them in as many speech therapy practices as possible. Finally, his mission is to make children happy, seeing the children enjoying his books is the greatest achievement of all! Kalenga’s dream is to create an animated series based on the books, and though without a specific plan on how to do so at this stage, he is determined to make it happen!

The Lady Elizabeth School was officially founded on 14 September, 1987 with an initial roll of 14 pupils in two adjacent villas at Parque Espendido, Javea. Through the years the school expanded rapidly in numbers of pupils and the breadth of program on offer. Indeed, the original site proved too small for LES and eventually the Primary and Secondary schools were moved to separate sites and only in September, 2018 did they reunite to their present location on the Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell, with a current roll of over 1100 pupils, ages 15 months through 18 years supported by almost 200 faculty and support staff. Approximately 35% of the student body claims Spain as their home country, 30% British and the remainder from over 50 nationalities. The school offers a British curriculum foundation with older students sitting examinations at GCSE and A-Level in a wide variety of disciplines. Pupils are also afforded the opportunity to complete the Spanish Graduado and Bachillerato, allowing LES graduates to matriculate in tertiary institutions both here in Spain and globally. LES pupils have gone on to study in several different countries and the school is promoting strong connections with the growing list of alumni. LES is a Member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS), and is a certified examination centre for Cambridge, EDEXCEL, AQA, ABRSM and LAMDA Examinations. Caxton College is a mixed private school, situated in Valencia on the Mediterranean coast, offering a complete education to students between 1 and 18 years of age. It was founded in 1987 by the Gil-Marqués family, with the aim of providing Valencia with a School for both local and international children who want to study the British National Curriculum in a multicultural environment, following the British curriculum. The school was awarded certification as a British School Overseas, with the highest possible mark of “Excellent” in all areas, after a voluntary inspection carried out by ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) and NABSS (National Association of British Schools in Spain). Our involvement with each of our students and our concern for their future are crucial to their overall education. All of our students receive strong academic guidance and are also taught good fellowship, support for those less fortunate, good social behaviour and to question the world around them, all within a framework combining the British and Spanish cultures. Most of the students at Caxton College are Spanish. However, an increasingly large percentage is international, with 20% of our student body currently coming from overseas. It all started in a two-room office over a car dealership in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. The year was 1946. We create tools and experiences that help you to become an active explorer: hundreds of explore-for-yourself exhibits, a website with over 35,000 pages of content, film screenings, evening art and science events for adults, plus much more. We also create professional development programs for educators, and are at the forefront of changing the way science is taught. We share our exhibits and expertise with museums worldwide. The Exploratorium was the brainchild of Frank Oppenheimer. At various times, Frank was a professor, a high school teacher, a cattle rancher, and an experimental physicist. While teaching at a university, Frank developed a “library of experiments” that enabled his students to explore scientific phenomena at their own pace, following their own curiosity. Alarmed by the public’s lack of understanding of science and technology, Frank used this model to create the Exploratorium, believing that visitors could learn about natural phenomena and also gain confidence in their ability to understand the world around them. This was a groundbreaking idea for a science museum in 1969 when the Exploratorium opened. Nowadays, our community of more than four hundred Exploratorium staff members—scientists, artists, educators, exhibit developers, writers, designers, and more—forms the creative and administrative core for everything we do. We constantly brainstorm, evaluate, create, and invent the Exploratorium—but we don’t work in a vacuum. Throughout our history, we’ve invited scientists, poets, visual artists, musicians, and interesting thinkers into the Exploratorium to infuse our community with inspiration and new ideas, and to help us develop new directions for the museum. We also reach out to the local and global community in lots of ways. For example, our Community Educational Engagement Program links the Exploratorium with community-based organizations serving inner-city children, teens, and families. Our Global Collaborations program partners with organizations and people worldwide, focusing the Exploratorium's expertise in creating innovative, curiosity-driven exhibits and programs on each project's unique needs. We also partner with other institutions—NASA and NOAA, for example, on initiatives that foster a public understanding of science—and we work with other science centers on collaborative projects.
Since 1792, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has spoken to all walks of life: planting charts for those who grow their own food; recipes for those who live in the kitchen; Moon- and sunrise times for those who watch the skies; and forecasts for those who don’t like the question of weather, left up in the air. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is North America’s most popular reference guide and oldest continuously published periodical. Its history is as rich and diverse as the Almanac itself. Under the guiding hand of its first editor, Robert B. Thomas, the premier issue of The Old Farmer’s Almanac was published in 1792 during George Washington’s first term as president. Although many other almanacs were being published at that time, Thomas’s upstart almanac became an immediate success. In fact, by the second year, circulation had tripled from 3,000 to 9,000. Back then, the Almanac cost only six pence (about nine cents). Thomas’s last edition, in 1846, was not much different from his first, over 50 years earlier. However, in that time he established The Old Farmer’s Almanac as America’s leading periodical by outselling and outlasting the competition. He died in 1846 at the age of 80, supposedly reading page proofs for the 1847 edition. An almanac, by definition, records and predicts astronomical events (the rising and setting of the Sun, for instance), tides, weather, and other phenomena with respect to time. So, what made The Old Farmer’s Almanac different from the others? Since his format wasn’t novel, it can only be surmised that Thomas’s astronomical and weather predictions were more accurate, the advice more useful, and the features more entertaining. Based on his observations, Thomas used a complex series of natural cycles to devise a secret weather forecasting formula, which brought uncannily accurate results, traditionally said to be 80 percent accurate. (Even today, his formula is kept safely tucked away in a black tin box at the Almanac offices in Dublin, New Hampshire.) The Old Farmer’s Almanac is the oldest almanac in the country—started when George Washington was president. And we’re also proud to say that it’s still made in the U.S.A., which seems to be a rare claim these days. A new edition comes out every year by early September. You’ll start to see it climb in the non-fiction best-seller list until it’s #1 in the Boston Globe and other newspapers. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is the best-selling annual periodical in North America—sold coast-to-coast in the U.S. and Canada. The latest edition can be found wherever magazines and books are sold, from local bookstores to Amazon to our own Web store. If you look back at archive editions of The Old Farmer’s Almanac (see below), you’ll see that this small book with its yellowish cover hasn’t changed much. The words of the Almanac’s founder, Robert B. Thomas, guide us still: “Our main endeavour is to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humour.” Each edition calculates the tides and times for fishermen, travellers, sailors, bookkeepers, beekeepers, gardeners, prognosticators, pollsters, politician, cooks, and really anyone who walks this Earth, including farmers. There are useful tools—sunrise and sunset times, weather predictions, planting calendars, Moon phase dates, and reference tables. But that’s not all. This almanac is also an annual treasury of facts, trivia, notions, puzzles, pleasantries and amusements, poems, and just about anything and everything. You’ll also find the unexpected, such as stories about “How to Hypnotize a Chicken” and “How Not to Rob a Bank.” It’s hard to really capture what The Old Farmer’s Almanac is all about. Life as we know it, past to present? The cycles of the seasons? Perhaps it’s best captured in the words of others. Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining and accessible is something Bill has been doing most of his life. Bill discovered that he had a talent for tutoring in high school. While growing up in Washington, DC in the 1970s, he spent afternoons and summers de-mystifying maths for his fellow students. When he wasn’t hitting the books, Bill was hitting the road on his bicycle. He spent hours taking it apart to “see how it worked.” Now, he commutes by bike in both Los Angeles and New York. Bill’s fascination with how bicycles, airplanes and other things work led him to Cornell University and a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1977. Soon after, Boeing recruited him as an engineer, so he went to Seattle. The U.S. Department of Justice also recruited Bill for his unique technical expertise and pedagogical skills. It was in Seattle that Bill began to combine his love of science with his flair for comedy, when he won the Steve Martin look-alike contest and developed dual careers as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. Eventually, Bill quit his engineering day job and made the transition to a night job as a comedy writer and performer on Seattle’s home-grown ensemble comedy show “Almost Live” in 1986. This is where “Bill Nye the Science Guy®” was born. The show appeared before Saturday Night Live and later on Comedy Central, originating at KING–TV, Seattle’s NBC affiliate. With fellow KING–TV alumni Jim McKenna and Erren Gottlieb, Bill made a number of award–winning shows, including the show he became so well known for, Bill Nye the Science Guy. While working on the Science Guy show from 1992-1998, Bill won seven national Emmy Awards for writing, performing, and producing. The show won 18 Emmys in five years. To commemorate the series, the Bill Nye The Science Guy original lab coat is on display at the “T is for Television” exhibit in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Bill has written eight kids’ books which weave real-world science in a fun accessible way for a range of ages from elementary to middle school. Along with big picture thinking about global issues, Bill remains involved in a good-natured rivalry with his neighbour, actor and fellow environmentalist, Ed Begley. They compete to see who can save the most energy and produce the smallest carbon footprint. Bill has 4,000 watts of solar power and a solar-boosted hot water system. There’s also the low water use garden and underground watering system. After joining as a Charter Member in 1980, Bill is now the CEO of the Planetary Society, the world’s largest space-interest group. Under his leadership, the non-for-profit Society is growing and becoming more influential having members in 130 countries. Cofounded by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman, the organization’s mission is to empower the world’s citizens to advance space science and exploration. Space exploration brings out the best in us, because we solve problems that have never been solved before. “If we were to discover evidence of life on another world such as Mars or Jupiter’s moon Europa, it would utterly change this world. People everywhere would think hard about what it means to be a living thing and our responsibilities as stewards of our unique planetary home,” Bill says. His engineering and management experience enabled him to take the lead and play a hands-on role in making programs like LightSail2® a success. Bill is very proud of the MarsDials, three sundials mounted on the robotic rovers exploring Mars. Along with calibrating the cameras and reckoning the Sun’s position in the martian sky, these small instruments are fitted with the only message to the future carried on spacecraft since the Voyager missions launched almost 40 years ago: “To those who visit here, we wish a safe journey and the joy of discovery.” Bill says, “This is the essence of the scientific enterprise, the Joy of Discovery. That’s what the process of science is all about.” In 2017, Bill was a co-chair in the inaugural March for Science, a series of rallies and marches held in Washington, D.C., and more than 600 other cities across the world on Earth Day. The goal of the March is to celebrate science and the role it plays in everyday lives and to encourage evidence-based policy in the public's best interest. The global attendance of the movement was a total of 1.07 million participants. In the same year, Bill was the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary Bill Nye: Science Guy which premiered at SXSW. The documentary focuses on Bill’s life and his mission to stop the spread of anti-scientific thinking across the world. The film was a Documentary Spotlight at SXSW Film Festival and an official selection at HotDocs, Los Angeles Film Festival, and AFI Docs. The film opened theatrically in October 2017 and will be airing on PBS. Bill returned to television with the release of his new series Bill Nye Saves The World which debuted on Netflix in April 2017. On the show, Bill explores various problems and misconceptions from a scientific point of view, refuting myths and claims that rebuke science. Episodes feature lively panel discussions from a wide range of special correspondents, including space exploration advocate Emily Calandrelli, model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss and comic Nazeem Hussain. After its freshman season, the show received two Creative Arts Emmy Award nominations. Bill still visits Cornell regularly. From 2001 to 2005, he served as a Professor as part of the Frank H.T. Rhodes Visiting Professorship. As a thankful alumnus and as a tribute to his parents and their strong belief in the value of education, Bill designed and funded a 4-meter (12 foot) diameter clock installed on Rhodes Hall at Cornell in 2012. Bill, the inventor, has a few unusual patents – an improved toe shoe for ballerinas, a device to ease the motion of picking up baseballs, a magnifier made of water, and an abacus that does arithmetic like a computer – with only binary numbers. Along with his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell, Bill joined his astronomy professor Carl Sagan when he was elected the American Humanist Association’s Humanist of the Year in 2010. He was also the honoured by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the Ralph Coates Roe Medal in 2012.Bill holds Honorary Doctorate degrees from six universities: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College, Johns Hopkins University, Quinnipiac University, Willamette University, and Lehigh University. He has delivered commencement addresses at most of these schools along with the University of California Santa Barbara, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Harvey Mudd College, and Caltech. Bill currently speaks at colleges regularly and discusses a variety of topical science matters on news and television programs such as ABC World News, NBC Nightly News, CNN, Good Morning America, MSNBC, TODAY, CBS This Morning, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and more. Wordworks is a South African non-profit organisation that focuses on early language and literacy development in the first eight years of children’s lives. Since 2005 they have worked in under-resourced communities with adults best positioned to positively impact young children’s language and literacy development – parents and caregivers, family and community members, home-visitors, early childhood development practitioners and Grade R to Grade 3 teachers. They are working collaboratively to grow an informed, capable, resourced and motivated network of schools, organisations and institutions that promote the importance of, and work effectively for the improvement of, children’s early language and literacy, through their association with their programmes and materials. Wordworks offers training, resources and support for partners who wish to use their early language and literacy programmes in their own networks. Their programmes all include messaging about the importance of language for literacy development and the need to build children’s home language in the early years as a foundation for the acquisition of a second language. They advocate for children to have access to multilingual, language rich stories and books, as well as meaningful experiences with print. They also know that letter-sound knowledge and phonological awareness are key predictors of whether children learn to read and write, and have developed resources and guidelines to support these important foundations for literacy. Their programmes are based on an emergent literacy perspective and the idea that learning to read and write is a process that happens over time in the context of supportive and responsive relationships. They offer five main programmes, which are used by their network of partners which include preschools, schools, libraries, community organisations, training and resource NGOs, tertiary institutions, education districts and other government departments. Programmes are sustained through ongoing relationships with Wordworks, including refresher training and events, input and guidance, access to resources and opportunities, sharing of learning, and support for programme monitoring and evaluation. The programme was established in 2019 and is currently based primarily in Koutaya, Dubreka (Republic of Guinea). The scheme has been devised specifically to advance child education by providing primary schooling and learning resources to children in areas with reduced opportunities or where significant shortfalls have been identified. The vision is to embed the URBOND philosophy of ‘building bigger, stronger communities together’ on an international scale by involving the charity’s participants in the UK in the organisations work in Africa. The impact that the charity and its participants are having in the Republic of Guinea is just the beginning of what can be achieved by bringing people together to form stronger communities.
I am a Zambian born, comes from a family of 8 and the youngest of the Mwila’s. My siblings always thought I was spoilt because I was the youngest, but I don’t think so! I was born in a town called Mufulira on the Copper belt side of Zambia in 1981,the Copper belt province is rich with mineral finds and Mines, hence the name. I am Married to Eric and we have a beautiful daughter called Chanda, she is 15 years. I completed my matric in 1999 and my mother advised me to study food production since I loved cooking, I did it for her though it was a course that I never dreamt of studying. I graduated successfully and worked for 2 years as a chef, got tired of cooking, I dodged that career and went into studying computers, worked as a receptionist and studied Human resources at the same time and obtained a diploma. I worked for a courier company as a Human Resources assistant. In 2012, I moved to South Africa, Cape Town when I got married, joined a Mobile Money company called Zoona with operations in Zambia, and I worked there for 5 years as a support agent. Zoona is an African Fintech company founded in 2009 with the vision of helping communities thrive. Apart from the above, I am a lover of interior designing, and my wish is to have one of the most successful Interior business one day, through my passion for interior, I designed my sister’s Kitchen area, how amazing!!! I love cooking and baking (especially Cake pops), they are my favorites!!! I love adventure, gardening and working out too, I am a gym freak. Project Playground, founded in 2010, is a non-profit organisation, engaging over 840 vulnerable children and youth in townships outside Cape Town in South Africa. Princess Sofia of Sweden, at the time Sofia Hellqvist, and Frida Vesterberg, relying on experience and knowledge from the non-profit sector, felt there was a need to focus on the individual's development in combination with a holistic perspective about the child and his or her unique personal needs, in order to create a sustainable and long-term change at both individual and system level. Their vision is a world where every child and youth grows up with a belief in the future and the opportunity to positively impact their own lives. With a holistic approach, they work using educational, recreational and supportive programs to empower vulnerable children and youth. One by one. They aim to create self-reliant individuals who are capable of managing their own lives and therefore contribute to the democratic, financial and equal development of their society. By being part of Project Playground, children gain self-esteem, determination and belief in the future. These three things are key to creating better life conditions and resilience, which results in a ripple effect throughout the whole community. Project Playground works exclusively with and for the children and youth forced to grow up in the legacy of Apartheid. They are established in areas that are systematically socially and economically deprived and in a society with an absent support system. Many of the children come from broken and abusive families, where they are victims of neglect, various types of abuse, malnutrition and lack positive role models. Due to the circumstances of their environment, many children are deprived of a true childhood. That is why Project Playground intervenes early and works long term with both children and their surroundings to create holistic change on an individual, community and systematic level. Without adequate teachers, school books or school facilities, children in townships become further disadvantaged. Policy changes are needed to incorporate a more holistic, supportive approach in schools where children have access to psychosocial support but also where teachers and employees have a broad understanding of Children's Rights and are able to uphold and be guided by a bespoke Child Protection Policy adapted to that specific school. This will equip and protect both school personnel and the students and contribute to a broader, deeper and more sustainable protective environment for children. Project Playground believes that the way forward is to be proactive rather than reactive, and to focus on the individual in everything they do. Decisions and actions should are based on prevention, sustainability and motivation for a positive attitude towards life and the people around them. Project Playground creates a safe space for children to be children. Because we know that what happens early, matters a lifetime.
I have four passions in life. My sport, family, work and God. Each I pursue with dogged determination to be better and to excel. The greatest blessing and experience in life is the privilege of life is having a loving and supporting wife and incredible children. My relationship with each of them is treasured above all. I am blessed in that I am healthy, enjoy the blessing of life and am extremely active. I am thrilled to be able to compete on the international stage for home and country. Success therein is just a cherry on top. Career and work has been an incredible experience. They focus their work not only on gender diversity but also on young women who are historically underrepresented in computer science fields. We've opened an N.P.O Youth Initiative. We are developing youth in programs such as soccer, reading and our culture. We conduct awareness campaigns about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. We facilitate the formation of support groups. And I have passion in farming. We started poultry farming and rabbits and we are selling the eggs in our community. I worked for 43 Air School as a receptionist for 5 year and while I was there I used to help out at the Admin area and at Marketing department and that had lead me on having an interest on becoming 1 of the Managers but unfortunately we got retrenched. Then I worked for Lendcor group as a Sales consultant for 1 year 6 months same we got retrenched. That's where I decided to start my small business just to put food on the table until now but things are not doing well due to Covid-19.
I am a God fearing individual, and I’m also a father to two beautiful kids, a boy and a girl. I worked for Tekkie Town as a Sales Assistant and I was chosen as the best Sales person for the entire Mpumalanga province. I also worked for the Department of agriculture as a Data capture. I have a passion for sports, football is one of my favourites and one day I wish I can own a soccer team. While I was in high school, I always wanted to be a lawyer but due to financial constraints I could not become one. My interest in the justice system came when I realised that the late former president Mr Nelson Mandela was also a lawyer representing his people. I wish one day I could give back to my community and its people because my community gave us the likes of the late Steve Bantu Biko, one of the BCM Members who fought for the people of South Africa. My community is one of the underdeveloped communities of this country, but I know that one day all of this will change because I know that with education anything is possible. When a child is educated communities will change for the better and if one community changes, then our country will change for the better as well and poverty will be no more. Education topped with one’s perseverance is the key to a bright future for all. With this pandemic people have lost their jobs and in some households you find that no one is working and people resort to drugs and alcohol, some get depressed to a point of taking their own lives. If we can start developing jobs for people, our continent would become a better place for us all. Being part of an initiative that supports the empowerment of those less privileged is one of my greatest wishes. I will be glad if all my wishes do come through because nothing is as important as education and hard work, and an educated country means a better world for us all.

My name is Glorymar Hernandez, but I prefer to be called “Glory”. I was born in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, and grew up amid the crowds of the city, the tranquility of the Andean mountains and the joy of the Caribbean coast. A mixture that has taught me to enjoy wherever I am, that aroused my curiosity to know the world, and that has helped me to adapt, with relative ease, to changes. I have a degree in Philosophy, my research works are in Philosophy of Language. Since 2019 I have been working as a Spanish teacher. I decided to start teaching my mother tongue thanks to my experience learning other languages. I had the opportunity to live for a year in Ireland, where I went to learn English and, currently, I am in Italy, where I have had the opportunity to learn Italian. These experiences allowed me to realize that, although seeking perfection when trying to “speak like a native” is the ideal, what really matters is being able to communicate, make ourselves understood and be open to the experience of knowing other cultures and understand that there are many different points of view. Professionally, I have had the opportunity to work in different contexts such as banking, outsourcing consular procedures, and teaching at university level. The biggest lesson I learned from these experiences is that I am not an office person. I prefer to own my time and have the freedom to work wherever I am. For this reason, I have decided to dedicate myself to teaching Spanish online and to enter the digital world. I consider myself a very curious and versatile person, that is why in my free time I enjoy handcrafting (such as sewing or knitting), volunteering, being in contact with nature, and trying to learn new things, like playing the guitar. I’m Toni-Leigh, born and bred in the Mother City of Cape Town. My fiancé and I, are parents to a lively 2-year-old girl who arrived 5 years after losing our 3-year-old son to a rare genetic disease. I love learning new things. Growing up, I was a voracious reader, reading anything and everything (even the classifieds and property ads) and with the advancement of technology over the years, I can have information at the tip of my fingers, so I’m always eager to learn new things and I’m a fast learner. I’ve always had an interest in Information Technology and was the go-to person in my office before my colleagues would go to the IT office, and now I’m looking into further studies so that I can develop my knowledge and skills. In 2005, I graduated from Varsity College with a Diploma in Travel and Tourism, with aspirations of travelling worldwide in my profession. Things didn’t quite work out that way, having worked in retail and a company assisting young people to live and work in the UK. In the last decade or so, I’ve been in the tourism industry behind the scenes, working for an online holiday accommodation booking agency and more recently a company that does tours and safaris in Southern Africa. I also do freelance work remotely, such as, captioning for a speech-to-text service and social media evaluation. I am an introvert but enjoy working with and being in the company of others, while also enjoying being on my own. In the past I used to view being an introvert as a weakness because those higher up in the ranks of the companies I worked for were extroverted but in recent times I realised how much of a strength it is being an introvert as I also have a strong sense of empathy, which I believe is key in Customer Service and building interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients. I’m passionate about customer service and going the extra mile and l love that feeling of knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s day, whether big or small. People tend to describe me as hardworking, punctual, efficient, dependable and trustworthy. Covid-19 affected the tourism industry drastically, however, I still want to travel anywhere I can, just soaking up the different cultures and experiences. The last year has been both challenging and rewarding and it has made me see things in a different light and so it has been somewhat of a new beginning for me. I am motivated now more than ever to seek out new passions and adventures and to get out of my comfort zone.
The JOG Trust (Joy Of Giving Trust) is the custodian of Kidz2Kidz Projects and the Santa Shoebox Project. We are one of the leading children’s charity organisations in South Africa. The smallest gesture of kindness can have a profound effect on a child. We see this, every day, in the children we reach through our Projects. Our Cool2BeKind workshops teach children in all communities, the value of kindness and empathy as alternatives to bullying and abuse. Through a structured, term-based program, Love2Learn provides support for teachers and children in under-resourced schools, while encouraging advantaged schools to become involved.
Wamkelekile (‘Welcome’ in isiXhosa) to one and all! My name is Iman Martin – ‘Iman’ having both Arabic and African meanings for ‘faith’. Just like my name, I come from a multicultural background: my mom has Indian and Malaysian origins, while my dad is from the Griqua people/clan in South Africa. In the same vein, I am a Muslim and have Christian relatives, with who I am very close. It is because of my diverse background that I feel I was raised to be both tolerant and respectful towards those that are of a different culture, religion, or ethnicity. Cape Town has been the only home I know, and I’ve never ventured far out of it. I do however envision myself travelling to different parts of the world a few years from now. I am passionate about women’s empowerment and women having the choice to choose for themselves! I have recently graduated from the University of Cape Town, with a Bachelor of Social Work (Psychology Major) and placed on the Dean’s Merit List, awarded for consistent academic achievement. Through hard work and perseverance, I was fortunate to have received a scholarship from the Department of Social Development for three of my four years of study. My mini-thesis explored the experiences and challenges of 1st-year students at UCT adjusting to university. Studying social work has not only allowed me to better understand those around me and their thought processes but also, to better understand myself and the possible reasons why I am the way I am. As part of my course requirements, I had to complete field practicals – by putting the theory that I was learning in class to practice in a real-world environment. My field practice experience ranged along a spectrum: from providing social work services to underprivileged youth in a primary school in Bonteheuwel, to interning in the more affluent area of Upper Wynberg, at an international school. This experience further fostered my innate empathy and non-judgemental outlook for those around me. I am someone who is not afraid to get my hands dirty, work hard and help out where I can: currently job hunting, I have occasionally been helping my father with renovations to his property that include painting, plastering, applying putty, etc. This has taught me many practical things that I hope to apply when I own my own house one day. A few months before now, I worked as a Personal Assistant to a therapist and social worker. This was a remote job that taught me valuable organisation and time-management skills. In my early years of study, I found myself working a sales assistant job at the Robben Island Museum Gateway store, and found that my favourite part of the job was interacting with the different tourists that happened upon our humble store and hearing their stories – where they were from and why they decided to visit SA, etc. I love reading, and since a young age, I’ve been considered a bookworm. I mainly enjoy supernatural and sci-fi novels and webcomics, as well as other forms of content such as newspaper and magazine articles (need to know what’s happening in the world around me). English was also my favourite subject at school, and I think this was also encouraged by my English-teacher mother, who was quick to correct any incorrect grammar and pronunciation when my siblings and I spoke incorrectly. I often assisted her in marking her learners’ English examination scripts and as a result, am quick to pick up on spelling or grammatical errors. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, long walks with my dog Ninja, and photography. This has led me to submit a piece that is currently being exhibited at the Zeits Mocca Art Museum, in their long-running ‘Home is Where The Art Is’ exhibition. Furthermore, my faith has given me strength through the darkest times and taught me to be tolerant and understanding of those around me. I am still very much figuring life and myself out as I go along and am always open to learning from those around me.

Here’s a brief introduction to who I am. I am a new mommy to an adorable baby boy. A jack of all trades. I’m an artist at heart, fitness enthusiast, avid reader, and quite academic. I was born on the 9th of August in the year 1996 in Elim, a small village in the Limpopo Province. I grew up in Johannesburg and later moved to Pretoria in 2006 when I was in Grade 4, where I completed the rest of my school career. I have always been one to participate in almost every extra-mural activity since my primary school years, I played softball, hockey, and cricket. I took part in cross-country and district athletics to name a few. My love for sports made me gravitate towards what I currently do part-time, I train on a regular basis, and I am a wellness coach and a distributor for a prominent nutrition brand. A large part of what I do involves helping people correct their nutrition and learn more about the benefits of healthy eating so that they can lead a healthier lifestyle and feel great while they are at it. I have been involved in various projects that involved giving back to those in need. I have been involved with an initiative called Feed a Homeless Homie, where we made food for the homeless and distributed it at least one weekend a month, I also helped a friend of mine with a pads drive for less fortunate girls, I also give clothes to homeless shelters for women and children whenever I can and I worked with an NGO known as Keep That Gold Shining (KTG) where we tutored young kids in high schools in the townships. I am a philanthropist at heart and believe that even the smallest contribution goes a long way. As mentioned, I am also an artist, mostly self-taught. I do painting on commission as well as pencil sketching. I do not have a specific style as yet, but most of my work features women from different walks of life. I would like to collaborate with more artists in the future and have exhibitions. I try to read at least one book a month. My favorite writers have always been James Patterson and Dan Brown however I recently branched out to other genres besides suspense and thrillers. Rome wasn't built in a day. I’m of a very friendly nature and love to be with people who aren’t selfish. I am ambitious and will do anything to achieve my aim - "The Universe applauds action not thought" I’m of a very adventurous nature and love to find good in everything I see. There are many things that make us depressed or upset, but that doesn’t mean that we stop living. You dust yourself off, honor the difficult times for the lesson it taught you, and walk away stronger and wiser. Independence and confidence were key in my life from a young age with venturing to the UK straight after school, and eventually ending up in Cape Town as my dream destination to live a happy balanced life where beautiful sunsets are part of your everyday life, and reminds you that dreams do come true. My professional life started as a labourer painting parks in the dire UK winter weather to Insurance consultant for a huge corporate company. Getting to know me over time, it became clear that I adapt quickly and take pride in everything I do, as I strive to leave everything and everyone better than you found them. Covid-19 and the drastic changes that came with it has been the most challenging and rewarding time of my life. With a system that failed us all in so many ways, living a financially stable life is nearly impossible but forced me to get grounded with nature and realize that the best things in life are truly free. My senses for nature, animals, and my overall humility enhanced drastically. We are all just reminded once again that nothing ever goes as planned and that losing everything including your mind might be necessary to make you realize what a strong, resilient, and galactic species we truly are. Realizing this, I am now more than ever ready to spread love and kindness whilst challenging myself with new adventures that push me out of my comfort zone. There is no other time than the present that truly matters. And in this moment, I am excited to change my reality and the lives of those around me.
I was born in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), South Africa. I’m an outgoing person who is both introverted and extroverted depending on who I’m with. I enjoy meeting and interacting with new people because I believe this is how you learn and grow as a person. I’m forever looking for new adventures or challenges. I’m a go-getter, never afraid to fail because we learn more from our failures and build character from them. I believe one is never too old to learn something new things. “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” doesn’t apply in my life. I enjoy the outdoors, especially hiking, which has exposed me to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in South Africa. I also love taking game drives and explore our nature, especially the animals in their natural habitats. I haven’t had the opportunity to travel beyond the borders of my country. Hopefully one day I’ll travel the world, meet different people and get to experience diverse cultures and cuisines. I had dreams of becoming a medical doctor but due to financial difficulties I settled for a National Diploma in Biomedical Technology. At least I got to work in the medical environment with doctors and other medical personnel for about 5 years. I realised that working in a laboratory was not suitable for my personality because I love people, I enjoy interacting with different people. I enrolled for a Diploma in Marketing and that led me to the pharmaceutical industry where I combined both my medical background and the marketing qualification. I worked in Sales and Marketing departments. I also had the opportunity to turn my passion for fashion into a business adventure and started my online clothing store, which was a very exciting and challenging adventure. I learned a lot about importing and e-commerce. When motherhood happened and I took a break to become a stay home mom. I got involved in fitness and nutrition business. I realised that the entrepreneurship bug has got me and needed to empower myself to avoid mistakes I made in my previous business adventures, that is when I decided to register for a BCom degree in entrepreneurship via Unisa, which what I’m currently busy with. I am also teaching English as a foreign language online on a freelance basis. I plan to also learn one or two foreign languages as I plan to travel the world in the not-so-distant future. I’m excited about the future and learning more in this university of life.

All my primary education, higher education done here in Cape Town, while was at school developed love for Sport, now I’m applying that love for sport to the young kids in my community keep them out of trouble, we grow up with a lot of trouble in my community now trying to chase that away, to build bright future to the young people by involving them in sport education activities, sport and education goes together if you want to build better future for others. Coming from where I came from, hard work pays, I was offered a Learnership qualification which introduced me to corporate world quite extensively. Good written and verbal communication skills in at least two of three official languages of the Western Cape, problem-solving and conflict management with good planning and organizational skills, ability to handle information as confidential and good interpersonal skills, to contribute and become part of a successful organization that motivate its employees to utilize their skill and talent effectively and efficiently, the knowledge and skills which I acquired over that period of time equipped me for future positions. I am a hard-working individual, and eager to learn, I was recently employed due to Covid-19 company layoff some staff. I was employed as Accounts Controller at Tourvest Travel Service and this involves extensive client interaction. I am Alonzo Van Aarde, born on 9th July 2002. I was raised in Cape Town, South Africa, I am the oldest son out of 6 children, Recently (last year 2020) I have matriculated in my hometown, Mitchell’s plain. I never quite had a fixed job but I have had my fair share of holiday jobs in a shoe store it was called first stop shoes in a shopping complex close to home. In my free time, I would work private jobs with my father and doing shop fitting and house renovations all over Cape Town. I loved helping my father out. It was also a way for me to have extra pocket money. I also worked at a Taylor blinds company, whereby the production of blinds called Taylor blinds in Montague gardens. I took part in various programs whilst at school, namely, in leadership development skills with a NPO called M.O.V.E and another called J.A.M, where I was taught to run my own business. This was done during my schooling, I have obtained certificates for these courses. These two courses were done over a period of 12 months, I was also an RCL members as well as a Prefect at my school. I am also part of a group called M.O.C (mission of Christ), where I furthered my leadership skills but in a more spiritual sense in doing so we take part in outreach programs and preach the gospel. I speak fluently English and Afrikaans. I am currently studying Japanese, because I am intrigued by it. I am computer literate, Microsoft enabled as well as Linux. I am also a musician. In my spare time, I teach people to play an instrument and also to read music. I also write my own music as well as produce music. I use this skill to help many young and upcoming artists I work with an Organization called My Child Is Your Child, Creating a platform where young people can showcase their talents and make something out of themselves. I live in a rough community where children are killing children and I’ve joined this organization to make a change in a community through various forms of art. My hobbies are, playing different sporting activities, going to the gym, writing music and drawing portraits.

Family is everything to me! My passions are a mix between working with/building fruitful relationships with people whether it be in the workplace or day to day life, I love helping people and bringing out the best of those around me. I’ve never got the chance to travel outside of South Africa, however it is something I have always wanted to do and I know I will accomplish in the future. My work life has involved various industries, starting off with retail and moving on to the sales environment, both internal and external. I could say I had a certain plan for my life and career, but that all changed when I unexpectedly fell pregnant with my son. I was born to a mixed-race couple in the "old South Africa (during apartheid)" while the political climate was unstable and in its rebirth stage, my mixed-race background has made me culturally rich. Ancestrally I come from a diverse lineage, I have a Scottish and Irish father, a mother with little french a little Indian (Afghan and Pakistani), I have a little of everything, which has made me the odd one out as I look different from the rest of my family, I do not fit in with the brown people, I do not fit in with the white people and there is nothing wrong with that I do not need to be labeled to feel like I belong, I am one of the reasons why our country is known as the rainbow nation a mix and mashed beautiful product of all that is good. My personality and likes have made me the odd one out and the weird one, luckily my husband is just as weird as I am, I always tell him my weird matches his weird, it makes us a perfect match, we were made for each other destined to be together almost as if it was written in the stars, a destiny fulfilled with a happy future in the ahead of us. Happy and together forever and always, I still find it hard to believe that there is someone out there who not only gets me, who understands me, my way of thinking, and the way I view the world but most importantly who LOVE'S ME for ME! I consider myself spiritual and not religious, although I was raised catholic and attended a convent, where a lot of who I am today was made. The making of ME! The Sisters of Mercy and catholicism had the opposite of the intended effect on me, I am not deeply rooted in the catholic faith, even though I had many lovable and amazing teachers and friends who made my school days worthwhile. Religion does not make sense to me and I consider much of it to be untrue, designed and shaped to manipulate and to rule the masses or one could say those who prefer not to think for themselves who would rather be sheep and led to the slaughterhouse willingly. My philosophy is this: as long as I love myself and my neighbor, I believe I'm living the right way and try to instill those principles and values in my two sons. I believe that knowing and giving Love encompasses all the values needed to live a healthy life, Love naturally breeds, respect, forgiveness, and mindfulness. Love means living from the heart when one lives from the heart it naturally voids the ego, the ego destroys the manically malevolent whereas the heart creates and builds, Love is a tool with which one can build a life rich in emotional health, enlightenment, and mental stability. Love is my church, love is my essence and if ever I am in doubt I read up on the writings left to us by all the great masters, Jesus, Muhammed, Buddha the Dalai Lama and so many more masters, some of whom are more modern and still living and basically all their writings convey the message of Love. So this me and there is more to me than what is written here, but what is written here is more than enough to get to know me better.
I grew up in a small farm community in the Eastern Cape. The world I knew then was only what was surrounding me; the farm, farm lands, livestock, bushes and forest and two or three other farm dweller families. That was my reality, no big cities or big townships. I never knew anything about big rivers, oceans, lots of animals, no idea of big mountains etc. When I grew up my parents moved to the city, things changed, it was a total new world. My world got so complex and vast. It was when I started visiting beaches, zoo, animal sanctuaries, visit nature reserves and botanical gardens and travelling by boats, ships and fly in aeroplanes. I am now an avid traveller, I also go for walks in the natural environments, listen to birds singing and so on. The world has so much to offer for those who grab these opportunities. As a family man, I often visit with my family to city parks, nature reserves, and lots of community projects that take care of animals and the environment. I am both an environmental and social activist, and I have spent most of my life either being involved directly in the protection of fauna and flora or training those who are involved in the same. When I travel or visit other countries, I visit mostly destinations that would offer natural and aesthetic beauty to tourists. I also have a huge interest in climate change as it is, among others, influenced by human behaviour, more especially air pollution. I am also interested in religion, more especially African Traditional religion. The reason for my interest in this branch of religion is because it is mostly nature based. In other words, it is religion that does not separate between humans and nature. For the adherents of this religion life is one and God manifests himself through nature and therefore taking care of nature is a religious duty. As an environmental and social activist, I am involved either through making financial contribution or contributing my time in community projects of different kinds. These projects would include contributing shoes to primary school learners who have no shoes, contributing money to soup kitchens for crèches and unemployed job seekers and many other projects. I am hoping to sustain these initiatives to a level where they can help more people.
I am a 28-year-old woman who is passionate about youth work in communities across South Africa. I have volunteered my time with NGO’s specifically tailored for the youth in Cape Town, Port Shepstone and East London. I believe that the youth are capable of great things in our country and the entire world, I take great pride in mentoring young girls to believe the above-mentioned statement and to push themselves to get to their goals. The concept of hard work is simply lost in the generation of instant gratification and I believe that every person needs to learn this, starting from a young age. My career took me from being a waiter in the restaurant (my first job here) to Restaurant Manager, Sales Manager in Timeshare Company to MD and CEO of ZA Galvanizing. At the end of the August this year, I left my last position of Regional Sales Manager of EXIM International. When it comes to business, I am dedicated, punctual, loyal and organized with the skill set that made me achieve any task in front of me with the high rate of success. Privately, I am a nature and animal lover, a bit of the environmentalist and lifelong naturist. I am one of the funders and first Chairman of Western Cape Naturist Association – WCNA and South African National Naturist Association – SANNA. I am a 26-year-old woman, born and raised in Johannesburg, where I have lived my entire life. One of my biggest aspirations is to travel across South Africa and eventually the world. Although I was bred a city girl, my heart lies at sea. Another one of my aspirations is to own a home along the South African coast, within walking distance to the beach. I have been known as a bookworm since childhood. I always preferred to have my nose in a book rather than watching cartoons, hence my passions are reading, writing, and editing. Taking my love for books into account, I decided to study English literature, linguistics, and journalism. I have a great love for animals, and I currently have four dogs and a cat. I also love being out in nature. I am always keen to go hiking, take a trip to the beach, or take the dogs for a walk in the park. Another one of my interests is fashion. I have my own sewing machine and often create clothing for myself. I believe we are all responsible for our actions, and we decide where we want to go in life. Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, I am a 22-year-old who could be described as ambitious, hardworking, and a perfectionist. I board people’s family pets for prolonged stays, preferably to ease the stress of worrying about their pets in cages. I have been doing the boarding for almost a year now and have a repeat doggo whom I love very much and his month stay is always a blessing. I fostered puppies and cats for shelters and they’ve all been adopted, I rescued a Staffordshire terrier from an outreach with a friend and healed him from the horrible mange he had and he got adopted by someone who flew from JHB and drove back up and now he lives the king life he deserves.

I would describe my personality as a little of everything. Likewise, I am creative, adventurous, driven, curious, enthusiastic, observant, positive, and self-aware. “The key to unlocking complexity, is simplicity itself” This is the lesson that I have learned time and time again, not just in business, but life as well. Hence my perspective, in that we can complicate life or take a pragmatic approach. I grew up in a single parent household, with my father and younger sister, uncommon in my community whereby most single parent would be one’s mother, but this has shaped my thinking…not everything is what it seems. Firmly believe that personal and moral growth is a direct consequence of uplifting communities and protecting the vulnerable. Recently, I was the MD of a rural firefighting programme and still remains one of my passions in terms of assisting underserviced communities. I’ve worked in television, mainly satellite broadcasting, the South African revenue service, back into broadcasting, then firefighting and now green economy initiatives including a component of green building construction and manufacturing. Personally, an avid motorcycle enthusiast as well as a proponent of animal welfare. As you will notice from my pictures, motorcycles and pets. Right now, we have 10 pets, 4 dogs and 6 cats. All are adopted and some rescued, save for the German Shepherd.
I’m a proactive recent college graduate (International certificate in Cyber Defence) from the Institute of Advanced Cyber Defence in Sandton, South Africa. During the course of my academic career, I also managed to accrue nearly 10 years of work experience. I had the privilege of working for Absa Bank Limited as a Forex Teller and an International Banking Consultant, where I learned valuable professional skills in foreign exchange, global banking, and branch operations. While working at Absa bank, I was exposed to a culture that had a high demand of customer or client services. I learnt to be a much organised individual and now able to deal with projects at hand and also to work under enormous pressure. I was awarded Teller of the year for two consecutive years and had been an ”A” performer, influencing my colleagues to do the same. The role of being second in charge at the Teller department empowered me to lead, supervise and initiate action. I empowered myself by studying and finishing a Certificate in Banking, after which I registered and obtained a Higher Diploma in Banking, specialising in Treasury and International Banking. My passion for International Banking and Financial markets led me to register and obtain a certificate for Regulation and Ethics of the SA Financial Markets with the South African Institute of Financial Markets. In 2015, I wrote an article about ”My purpose and Journey” within Barclays Africa and won that competition for a trip to Robben Island to meet the then Barclays Africa CEO Maria Ramos and the late political icon Amhed Kathrada. What inspires me most is the ability to positively impact the lives of others through the plethora of skills I have acquired over the many years of experience. As an educator I enjoyed the children. I did the required academics, got the job and my focus was numbers and more numbers. Again, I was challenged because my love for people was not satisfied. I once again did a complete change in my career by studying, job shadowing and taking on projects in the learning and development and human resource departments. One of my memorable periods was asking the CFO of the organisation to give me the opportunity to split my job in two areas to show my capabilities and therefore be considered for a position that was eventually created for me. This was exciting and I thrived in this environment. I felt like I was adding value as the position focused on the growth and development of the youth, once again. I knew that I could accomplish more and add more value through venturing out on my own. I started my own business which offers the services of learning and development, strategy, human resources and finance. This has been an exciting journey with many challenges.
I have been involved in the music industry for the better part of my life. As a performer and creator, I have had the opportunity to entertain many people over the years. I have a great passion for music and the arts in general. As an avid reader, I take great pleasure in immersing myself in the prose of those who are highly skilled in the literary arts. This stood me in great stead when I embarked on a course in Journalism a million years ago. Although I never completed the course, certain skills have stuck with me to this day. My journalistic endeavour was eclipsed by my musical passion. A passion that has given me much joy and also lead to much heartache. Nonetheless, being a staunch collector of music, it wasn’t long before I utilised this collection, and branched out into spinning records on dance floors around the country. Having grown up in Cape Town, South Africa, in the ‘80s, I was embroiled in the struggle for freedom. Battling the apartheid regime. This struggle, which was so much a part of everyday life, gave me a sense of something bigger than myself. A sense of community and belonging to something that was more important than my own personal well-being. Generally speaking, I would like to believe that I am an artist at heart. When I say that I don't mean that I like to draw or paint or any of the other physical manifestations of art. What I mean is that I approach life as art. If that makes any sense. I am the proverbial Jack of all trades. Master of a few. I think my biggest asset is that I am always willing to learn. That is something that I intend to keep doing until the last breath escapes my body.

The tough part is that you don't know me, nor I you, yet I'm trying to “convince” you that what I say is who I am as a person and that what I say is what it is. The eyes are windows to the soul…that isn't exactly happening here, and that sense cannot always be replaced through words alone. Born and raised in South-Africa by a single mother in humble surroundings. Doing Taekwondo for years and attained my International black belt with the following principles, this was a part of my childhood that guided me into my adult life: Showing courtesy to others no matter what level of society labelled them; training continuously whether I was up for it or not; showing integrity, even when no one was watching; perseverance when I wanted to give up; self-control when it was difficult to compose myself and learning from my couch to have an indomitable Spirit. Finishing school it was expected of me to follow in the "Afrikaaner Man's" footsteps to have a job where you work many long hours a day, week in and week out, get your salary, sleep and repeat. My passion for music gave me the confidence to follow my heart and to head towards Cape Town for a short holiday, but I ended up staying here and studied for Audio Engineering, whilst completing my studies and gaining experience in the industry. COVID-19 affected the industry drastically and I had decided to use my spare time productively by enrolling in courses such as Social Media marketing and Programming. I also started a small business where I rent out my sound equipment and host small gatherings and events. Helping friends with their business promotions and seeing how people enjoyed the events I have hosted, it made me realize that I have a passion to better others and their circumstances. Greetings to one and all. My name is Edith, I am a child of the universe and I want to share that every day is a beautiful day. True, our emotions fluctuate but at some point during each day we will recognise that the day is a gift we have received and if we be true to ourselves this will bring a smile and with it feel good energy. We should take this feel good energy and build on it so that each day it comes easier and earlier and like a muscle it will grow, become more evident and gather momentum and we will feel better for it. I believe in kindness and forgiveness towards others and myself. In a couple of months, I will begin the first year of my sixth decade on planet Earth. Twenty years ago I was facing a life-threatening illness and not doing too well, I am a miracle. I believe we are all miracles. Some would differ it can be a topic for discussion. I am a widow and live with and take care of my 87-year-old mother and 7-year-old granddaughter to whom I am foster mother. Thankfully, both are well. We live in a truly beautiful spot, the Deep South, Cape Peninsula, CT, South Africa, blessed in many ways I have much wonder and appreciation for this. I was born in Cape Town, grew up and completed my education in the best place in the world to have grown up at that time, yes! Zambia in the sun. I have very fond memories of my formative years in Zambia and still consider myself Zambian. It is the national anthem I sang as a child and I loved the then president, KK, Kenneth Kaunda. I returned to South Africa in 1980 to attend college and begin my independent years and in 1982 I moved to the newly independent Zimbabwe where I spent the next 21 years before returning to my roots in 2003. I have extensive administrative experience - getting things organised, getting things done. With a stable track record, I am able to diversify within different industries. As part of a team, I have a strong focus to resolve challenges and enjoy leaving any tasks I am busy with in a user-friendly state (do unto others). I pride myself on my attention to detail & due diligence, going the extra mile in terms of improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness. I did a one-year secretarial course in 1980 and my working life began from there. Living and learning life then became what I did, marriage, babies, etc. I guess I was lazy to further my qualifications, in hindsight I think I would have made a damn good surgeon LOL. Seriously, I have good eye, hand coordination, a good touch, and, consciously, I have become better at threading the needle. I believe strongly in being true to and honest with myself and I think I was then because family means more to me than a career. And now, I am ready to start that next chapter in my career. I am blessed. I have over the years done various short courses including a deep tissue massage course, so I am a certified masseuse however I only massage family and friends as I am no longer physically (strength and stamina) up to doing a job I am comfortable to charge for. Thought that was worth mentioning, as it brings me pleasure to help others breathe and take time out. I have always worked in administrative support positions from Girl Friday to Executive PA and everything in between and in many different industries. My last couple of jobs have been from home (virtual) and in a new field, namely customer service. This shift was challenging and I am proud to say I managed it pretty well. Working from home is what is necessary at this time given my current living circumstances. This change and the challenge that came with it reminded me that I have strong determination, which is a very good thing. I am concerned for my granddaughter’s generation and what life will be like for them as adults, especially the environment they will find themselves in physically, mentally, emotionally. I would love to become more knowledgeable and active in the conservation of water, a precious natural resource that as long as it comes out of the tap when we open the tap, many do not really appreciate just how precious it is and therefore the need to respect and conserve it. And, I would love to see the curricula in our educational systems adapting to educating our children to be more self-aware, mindful and able to guide their minds when it comes to EQ. Easy does it.

I am a positive, happy person who loves all aspects of my life. I love the beach, animals and children. I am a people’s person. I grew up in the Kruger Park and that is where my love for animals and people comes from. Love working with people from all over the world. I have three beautiful children and an amazing mom whom I adore. I received the most precious gift of all very recently when I was blessed by becoming a grandmother. Like most young people and since I can remember, I had a dream… I just wanted to be a teacher when I grow up. Like a lot of young people, I did not have the means to pursue my dream. At the age of sixteen, I started working in the Kruger Park tourist shop as a cashier during school holidays. Naturally, when I matriculated and because I could not attend a college or university to study what my heart desired, I started working for SANParks. I worked in different departments from the tourist shop to finally being promoted to year in advance bookings at SANParks head office. I will always “want to be a teacher in my heart, but never will I be disappointed for the foundation I had. Working for SANParks gave me the opportunity, confidence and knowledge to work with tourists from all over the world. They had a huge hand in the way I see people and the quality of work I offer. I will always be thankful. I am a loyal, loving, understanding, empathetic and kind individual. I learned a lot about people over the years. People tend to confide in me and I am a very good listener. I can solve problems easily because people listen to me and usually follow my advice. I was born in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, but raised in Jozini, Kwa-Zulu Natal and a Diver at heart. School Holidays were spent on the beach and in the ocean at Sodwana Bay. My Passion for acting started at a young age when I was approached by my arts teacher to play the lead as “Joseph” in that year’s school play, “Joseph and his technicolor dream coat”. In 2006, I moved to Saldanha bay Naval Base to conduct my basic training and upon completion, reported to Simon’s Town Naval Base Diving Centre. I worked at the Naval Diving Centre until mid- 2007, but reported for duty aboard SAS Spioenkop (Naval Warship) later that year and for the rest of my stay in the SA Navy. I resigned from the SA Navy at the end of 2009 to further pursue my childhood passion for acting, after it had been re-ignited back in 2007, when a Production Company came to shoot the one part series, “Diver’s Down”, at the Naval Diving Base where I was stationed. Since then, I performed numerous small roles in Films and TV Shows with goals and aspirations to become a successful actor in the industry. Years later and struggling in the industry, I started a Photography business in 2017 shooting headshots for actors in the industry and also specializing in Real Estate Photography. I also worked in the hospitality industry during this time, working my way up to head of staff at a fine dining Italian Restaurant in the Bellville area of Cape Town. In December 2018, I made the very hard decision to hang up my Actor’s hat and retire from the industry, as I needed to make a change. So with a fire in my belly and a pursuit of a new career, I embarked on an old passion within the boating world. I completed my Yacht Master Coastal and SAS Day Skipper certificate followed by a plane ticket to Nice, France. I spent a month walking countless amounts of steps that would make “Discovery Vitality” proud on the docks of the various harbors, handing out my CV in an attempt to book work as crew on board. With a few days worth of day work under the belt and finally booking an interview for a possible crew position, my visa expired and I needed to come home. Luckily, I was being strongly considered for a position aboard, but I needed to wait for the boat to come out of the drydock. With this, I flew back to SA with a hopeful heart, knowing that I would soon return to France. As things go, the opportunity was cancelled (Owner preferred a merger of the two available roles and he preferred a female). What to do now? Unemployed and with depleted finances of not being able to return, I started looking for work and was unemployed until Sept the same year when I finally got an opportunity to begin work as a Junior Site Supervisor for a Construction Business (not ideal, but hey challenge accepted and gotta pay dem bills son!). I have since then worked for the same company, building weigh bridges, expanding warehouses, pouring concrete floors and laying paving. I have learned so much and have grown allot since then. Recently I approached and dusted off my photography equipment again and am in the process of starting this up as well. Being in the construction industry has sparked allot of ideas and have given me a new passion for real estate, especially as an Investor. People tend to describe me as ambitious, hardworking, punctual and goal-oriented. I have high attention to detail and work really well in both a team environment and on my own. I am pro-active, a problem solver and creative at heart. I won’t stop until the project or task is completed. More personally, I enjoy the outdoors, love being fit and healthy and spending my off time with my most valuable assets; family and friends. I’m not comfortable settling, and I’m always looking for an opportunity to do better and achieve greatness. I am an excellent communicator. I pride myself on making sure people have the right information because it drives better results. Most business issues stem from poor communication, so I feel a responsibility to keep everyone on the same page. I am results-oriented, constantly checking in with the goal to determine how close or how far away we are and what it will take to make it happen. I find this pressure inspiring and a great motivator for the rest of the team. I am highly organized. I always take notes, and I use a series of tools to help myself stay on top of deadlines. I like to keep a clean workspace and create a logical filing method, so I’m always able to find what I need. I find this increases efficiency and helps the rest of the team stay on track, too. I’m a people-person. I love meeting new people and learning about their lives and their backgrounds. I can almost always find common ground with strangers, and I like making people feel comfortable in my presence.
Amoyo is an after school and weekend performing arts training platform (dance, acting, singing) working with over 150 impoverished children from the townships in Hout Bay. Amoyo is so much more than just a performing arts training programme. Our classes are a platform to engage with our youth, to show them we care about them, about the choices they are making, that we are there to support and help them develop into successful, employable adults. The Amoyo journey aligns skill development with self-respect, respect for others, integrity, emotional intelligence and communication skills needed to survive in the fast-paced professional world outside their immediate environment of poverty, neglect, criminal and gang activity. Our MISSION is to uplift the communities of Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg, one child at a time, through an after-school and holiday programme offering high-quality dance, drama, music and performance classes. Our VISION is that each Amoyo child will continue into tertiary education after school, equipped not only with performing arts skills but also with life skills, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-discipline to conquer life successfully. Our PHILOSOPHY is one of gratitude. Amoyo means “spirit of appreciation” (appreciating everything and everyone) and our unique approach to upskilling and empowering the children of Hout Bay is already having a huge impact, not only on the children but on their families and the broader community, too.
A principios de la década de los setenta Alicia Pietri de Caldera, concibió la idea de crear un museo para los niños y jóvenes venezolanos que no se pareciera a los museos tradicionales. En el periodo 1969-1974 Doña Alicia, en su condición de Primera Dama de la República y Presidenta de la entonces Fundación Festival del Niño, puso en práctica el Programa Arte y Cultura para los Niños, con la intención de desarrollar sus capacidades mediante actividades participativas. El programa evidenció la necesidad de vincular al niño con el arte, la ciencia y la tecnología para despertar aptitudes y dar respuesta creadora a las inquietudes e interrogantes del hombre del futuro. Esta necesidad se transformó en el objetivo de la Fundación Privada Museo de los Niños. Finalmente, el museo fue inaugurado en 1982 en la ciudad de Caracas. El Museo de los Niños de Caracas es único. Un gran laboratorio para experimentar y explorar, en el cual las máximas fundamentales son “Prohibido no Tocar” y “Aprender Jugando”. Un sitio donde se permite: tocar, resolver, explorar, inventar, relacionar, crear, participar y responder. Una nueva alternativa para educar a través de la recreación, estimular el aprendizaje a través del descubrimiento, enseñarle al niño un camino al conocimiento que parte de las cosas simples que lo rodean y lo llevan a otras más complejas. Las áreas básicas del Museo son: Biología, Comunicación, Ecología y Física. Con el pasar de los años se han actualizado muchas de las exhibiciones, para presentarlas de manera más novedosa a los visitantes, tales como las que muestran Los Sentidos, el Corazón y la Alimentación, en el Área de Biología. En el área de Física, la exhibición de Electricidad se transformó completamente para mostrar cómo se produce, se transmite, se distribuye y se consume. En el área de Ecología, se actualizaron las exposiciones acerca de los Parques Nacionales, las Cadenas Alimentarias, Reconoce tus árboles, y la Huerta, así como el estudio de TV y la pared de símbolos en el Área de Comunicación. Además, se han construido nuevas exhibiciones tales como Terremotos y Volcanes, el motor abierto de un vehículo, ADN, la magia de los genes, los Sistemas del Cuerpo, Cuida tu cuerpo y evita la diabetes, la Capa de Ozono y el Calentamiento Global, Ensayo y error, los comienzos de la aeronáutica, NANO, una miniatura inimaginable, el Astronauta, el Satélite Simón Bolívar, la Carrera Espacial, Jugando a ser Amigo Guía y El Rincón de los Cuentos.
Durban Africa Sports club was founded in 2007 on a need to serve the underprivileged and the community at large through sports development and engagement. Ensuring that the children within the club are given holistic development, Durban Africa Sports Club has run a Life Skills Week workshop annually for the last 4 years. This is supported by motivational speakers, sporting personalities and industry professionals who impart financial and life skills over the duration of the workshop. Durban Africa's next major milestone is the development of a Centre of Sports Excellence which will combine sporting and scholastic development for the underprivileged and SAFA accredited, all of whom are volunteers. This year will focus on development in the under 6-8years a and under 11 age groups We will make maximum use of the all funding given to the club to serve our club children and the wider community, as this is "Coaching with a difference".
Sydney Grammar School is one of the oldest schools in Australia. Its ancestor, the Sydney Public Free Grammar School, opened in 1825 with LH Halloran as Headmaster. In 1830, Sydney College was founded. Sir Francis Forbes, Chief Justice, became President of the College and laid the foundation stone of the present building in College Street on the 26 January 1830. In 1835 Sydney College opened in this building with WT Cape as Headmaster. In 1842, he resigned and was succeeded by TH Braim. In 1850 Sydney College was closed. Sydney Grammar School was founded by Act of Parliament in 1854, after Sir Henry Parkes, the Father of Australian Federation, tabled a petition from a group of citizens concerned that the fledgling University of Sydney should have a 'nursery' to provide it with well-prepared undergraduates. The re-founded School's work commenced in 1857, in the College Street buildings, which had been occupied immediately before this by the University of Sydney. Grammar has remained here ever since. More recently, Preparatory Schools at St Ives and Paddington have been established, and we take one hundred and twenty boys each year from these two institutions. The modern College Street has around eleven hundred boys, St Ives over four hundred, and Edgecliff three hundred. Our boys now proceed from the School to a variety of Universities in New South Wales and beyond, but the basic purpose of Grammar as set out in the Act – 'to confer on all classes and denominations of Her Majesty's subjects resident in the Colony of New South Wales, without any distinction whatsoever, the advantages of a regular and liberal course of education' – remains the same. Since its foundation, the School and its Old Boys (called 'Old Sydneians') have played an important part in the history of this country.

Established in September 1918 to serve the needs of ‘isolated’ and ‘outback’ children in the primary years, the School of Isolated and Distance Education has a varied history. It has evolved into an online K-12 school based in Leederville, a suburb of Perth. It continues to provide an education to Western Australian children and young people who are living in isolated, regional or remote situations. A hallmark of the school has been its adoption of new practices and technologies to improve the quality of the education it provides. In the past this has included print materials, television, video and audio recordings, use of the Royal Flying Doctor two-way radio, satellite, and more recently, internet technologies. Over the last decade, SIDE has transitioned from teaching and learning through correspondence to an online model. I am 56 years old and love life ! and am engaged to a wonderful man and we have been together for 9 years. I have 1 son who lives in Houston, Texas with his lovely wife and my 2 beautiful grandchildren. I have 1 sister who is sadly disabled. She has Motor Neuron Disease and is paralysed from the neck down. She has had this debilitating illness since 1998. I care very deeply for her and continue to walk this hard, painful journey with her. I would love to one day open up a strung of Care Homes called Mandy in honour of her. Watching your disabled sister struggle every day has been heartbreaking but through this I have learnt the art of caring, giving and kindness. To be able to help and be there for those less fortunate than you is a heartwarming experience and exceptionally rewarding. My passion is travelling – I absolutely LOVE IT ! My sport is Golf and because I have such an adventurous, extrovert personality I also love a lot of other things like Boating, Fishing, Cooking, Drinking wine and socialising. The list is so long because I am always willing to try new things and experience new places. I am an extrovert in personality and love bringing out the best in people. I also have experience in the setting up of Vaccine Clinics and GIT Units. My passion is service and looking after my customers. I love to make a difference in everything that I do and work hard. Seed of Hope began in just one room of a disused building on the rural outskirts of Durban. In 2003, founders Derek and Heather Liebenberg and a small core of volunteers felt the call to respond to the Aids crisis and its impact on families in KwaZulu Natal. At that time, the HIV pandemic was unchecked, as anti-retroviral medications were not yet widely available. The Liebenbergs launched an afternoon drop-in program for children who would otherwise be unattended and at risk of drifting into mischief, gangs or other dangerous behaviour. The classes were fun, teaching games, songs, crafts, Bible lessons and life skills. Soon dozens of children were attending daily and the program had been given a name – Simunye Time. Simunye means “we are one” in isiZulu. In the following months, the childrenʼs program gave birth to strategies to help people access basic health care, a support group for HIV-positive community members, and a small sewing class for unemployed women. Many of our clients were deeply affected by the HIV pandemic and suffered heartbreaking losses. It was a time when hope was scarce in the community of Bhekulwandle. Our vision to equip local community members to overcome challenges was birthed through the experiences and resilience of these friends and neighbours.
The Surfer Kids is a registered Non-Profit Organisation 136-987 NPO. Our mission is to "empower marginalised youths through surfing". THE SURFER KIDS CORE SURF PROGRAMME has been offering free surf lessons to the marginalised youths in the Southern Cape of South Africa since November 2010. Our Core Surfing Programme is based at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay. The primary focus of our CORE SURF PROGRAMME is introducing young children to surfing. Surfing isn't otherwise normally practised in Friemersheim, or any of the other surrounding marginalised communities. The children are introduced to surfing as a healthy way of having fun! As the children grow within the programme they are encouraged to progress. To paddle to the back-line and surf bigger and better waves. This is no easy task, as anyone who's ever tried surfing will know. Learning to paddle and catch waves takes a lot of hard work. But the reward of riding waves is one of the best feelings a human being can experience !!! This allows for the unique medium of surfing to teach one of the most fundamental and empowering life skills of all: Life may be full of limitations. BUT, by working towards a goal, with commitment, one can accomplish incredible things. Despite our limitations, whatever they may be, as long as we have great goals, if we're prepared to work for it, we can achieve what we've only ever dreamt of. And more. This is the message of hope and empowerment around which we structure our entire programme.
Heart-to-Heart Care Centre aims to bring life, hope and opportunity to children made orphaned or vulnerable in South Africa, by HIV/AIDS, TB and poverty. Heart-to-Heart believes that together WE CAN change the destiny of children, one child at a time. We are passionate about providing Holistic Care, Psychosocial Support, Education and Empowerment to Children, Youth and Women. We strive to see a self-sustaining community. We are tackling poverty that is centered around dignity and not dependence. Walking alongside women facing unplanned pregnancies. This team is dedicated to Care for and Support Teenage Girls and Women who find themselves in a crisis due to an unplanned pregnancy. Our aim is to help teens and women achieve their full potential in life. 70% of children between ages 8-10 years old will not be able to speak, write or read English by the time they are 13 years old. Only 50% of them will go on to write final exams in high school. This tugged at our hearts and therefor the Literacy centre was birthed! Where volunteers along with our Education Coordinator will assess and walk alongside these young ones to make sure they know they are not just a statistic on a board but a life that counts! Together, we can transform lives through literacy!
My name is Luis Guillermo Castro Martin. I am a philosopher specialized in philosophy of mind and language. In particular, I am interested in the nature of consciousness, and the way in which we experience and interpret the world. I started my studies at the Central University of Venezuela in 2006, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy (2011) and a master’s degree in logic and philosophy of science (2015). In 2012, the university offered me a position as a professor of philosophy and I taught several courses there until 2017, when I enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Genoa, Italy. I have also published several papers in philosophy journals and participated in various international events. In 2020, while writing my PhD thesis, I realized that I had been immersed in philosophy for too long and decided to use my experience to rejoin the real world. In my years studying philosophy, I have learned many things, but the most important is that the world is what we make of it, there is no ultimate truth, no final word. We create our reality. Knowledge has somehow separated us from others and nature, perhaps it can also reunite us. Although I was born in Venezuela, my family is a blending of different nationalities and traditions. I have lived and studied in different countries, which are all part of who I am and what I want to be. My actions define me, not my nationality or my origins. I do not believe in borders or limits; they are only in our minds. The sensation of not belonging can be liberating, once we realize that, by not belonging somewhere, we belong everywhere. I speak three languages (Spanish, English, and Italian) and I enjoy learning from other cultures, as well as transmitting the values of my own. I also enjoy music, sports and nature. I am the author of “Fragments of Mind” on Substack. A space for thinking outside the box, while discussing philosophical matters.
Milkwood Primary School is an English medium school situated at the Point in Mossel Bay, overlooking the sea. They serve a cross-section of the local community and are one of the most culturally diverse schools in the region. In 1992 numerous concerns resulted in the drawing up of a petition to start an English Language Primary School. It happened quickly, aided by the fast-growing numbers caused by the development of Mossgass. The first principal, Bill Innes, arrived full of enthusiasm in April 1993, with his surfboard and motorbike, to be followed later by his beautiful wife and two freckle-faced sons. The focus and tone of our discipline is positive and encouraging. However, this needs to be balanced with the reality that all children blossom in an environment where there is structure and routine. Learners need to know that there are consequences to our actions and certain actions could have serious consequences. In this environment, the child learns responsibility and respect for authority.
Point High School in Mossel Bay, Western Cape, South Africa is an established school that has been in the service of the community of Mossel Bay since 1921 with the aim of developing the child as a whole. The school is a public school. The teaching norms and requirements are determined by the Western Cape Education Department. The interests of parents are managed at local level by a Governing Body, the majority of whose members are elected by parents from their own ranks. Point High School has the services of a dedicated, energetic and fully qualified staff. The school is housed in a modern building that has the most beautiful views in the country, in addition to the usual organized sports tours, leadership camps and educational excursions are regularly undertaken. An active and dynamic Parent-Teacher Association makes a valuable contribution to various projects in the school.
It all started in 1999 with a vision to create a space where people could live and learn together in an ecologically sustainable environment. We share the story through the people that were part of shaping it. In 2019 the Sustainability Institute is celebrating its 20-year anniversary. We reflect back on this amazing journey, and share our story as told by some of the people that made all of this possible. The Lynedoch Eco-Village is a mixed community organised around a child-centered learning precinct. It strives to be a working example of a liveable ecologically designed urban system that is self-sustainable. Above all else, the Lynedoch Eco-Village provides a safe space where South Africans from all backgrounds can live in peace with each other and in harmony with nature. In our fifth video, we share some reflections from residents. The design of the Sustainability Institute was done by keeping in mind how available local resources could be incorporated into the infrastructure, how existing infrastructure could be reused and how the natural elements could be used to cool and heat the buildings. Take a look at how it all came together, as explained by the original architect, Gita Goven. The SI is committed to putting children at the heart of what we do. Education is a right for all children and our core work focuses on enabling access to quality education for children from the Lynedoch Valley. This is our third video which focuses on the various programmes related to the children and youth. You will get a glimpse into the Lynedoch Children’s House, SPARK Primary school, the Youth Hub programme and Lynedoch United Football Club. The Sustainability Institute hosts programmes designed to challenge conventional thinking and open minds to new ways of doing and approaching the known, while incorporating the entire space at the Institute as part of the learning experience. Take a look at the different educational programmes we have been offering since 2003. Food brings people together. At the SI we not only prepare delicious locally sourced organic food, but our food garden provides fresh vegetables and herbs used in daily meals for the children, students, and guests. We reconnect people with where food comes from, and our food garden and approach to food serves as a beautiful living-learning environment. When the Institute started in 1999, there were not many trees and wildlife around. To restore the natural ecosystem and to create a green space protected from any buildings or development, a piece of land was put aside for an indigenous woodland. Over the past 16 years our students, guided by the vision of our woodland custodian Bryce Anderson and Fumanekile Qhinga, have helped to plant trees and shrubs that have grown into this beautiful, peaceful woodland. Today it is flourishing and what was once a barren space, is growing into a dense forest of trees and shrubs. The woodlands provide an opportunity for solitude and connection to nature.

Home of Hope has evolved into an organisation that takes care of children, provides education to children with special needs and helps them to become productive and responsible members of the community, continuing support into adulthood through a working care farm and skills development opportunities. Home of Hope was founded in August 2005 by Eleanor Brook, who, inspired by her faith having adopted children of her own and having experienced life in a children’s home herself, wanted to harness her experience to provide support for other children in need of care. The organisation started as an interim ‘place of safety’ for children who were abandoned in dustbins to die, violently abused, raped, hungry and neglected due to poverty, infected with HIV and AIDS and those who were born bearing the effects of excessive drug and alcohol abuse by their mothers during pregnancy. During that time, it was found that many of the babies leaving the care of Home of Hope would return after a couple of months. Because of this, Home of Hope began to research the possible reasons. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder was discovered and many of the characteristics of FASD were found to be present in the children. The organisation began to look deeper into this disorder, but could not find many resources, support systems or solutions. South Africa has the highest rate of FASD in the world, where approx. 70 000 children are born every year suffering from this condition. 85% of children with FASD are not raised by their birth parents (usually they are in foster care or children’s homes) and come from families that are often unstable, with the child being in greater risk of physical and sexual abuse or neglect. Based on the challenges in caring for children affected by FASD, Home of Hope began to evolve to provide a long-term solution for our children, as well as services for other families that care for children affected by FASD. As the organisation grew and developed, we were able to respond to a bigger need – to provide a broader and more effective service for the protection of children – more than just that of interim places of safety.
Over 5.7 million South Africans are HIV positive and of the country’s estimated 3.7 million orphans, about half have lost one or both parents to AIDS, while over 150,000 children are believed to be living in child-headed households. The statistics can be utterly overwhelming… But God has called us to be the solution and each of us has something we can use to play a positive role. Some will be able to give financially, others may feel called to adopt, still others to volunteer or pray. When each of us uses what we have in our hands, we can make a difference. Through Kibwe we’re currently focusing on… We have three community-based foster homes, in Kayamandi (Stellenbosch), Franschhoek and Somerset West. We’re also in the process of starting a new home in Piketberg. Living in a small family unit with a caring foster parent is a reasonable alternative for children who can’t be cared for by their biological families. They have a foster family to support and care for them and we hope that one day they’ll either be reunited with their biological families, or failing that, that we’ve provided them with the necessary grounding to lead happy, successful adult lives. As Christians, expanding our families through adoption is a natural response to our faith. As more and more members of Shofar Christian Church are adopting and fostering children, there’s a growing need for information and support for those who are embarking on this journey. As the NGO mandated with orphan care within the church, we’ve begun hosting info sessions for anyone interested in finding out more about adoption and fostering, covering topics like our Biblical mandate to care for orphans and the basics of the process, as well as testimonies from families who’ve already adopted and fostered.
Heaven’s Nest was established in 2004 and is an emergency foster facility for young children in need. Located in Cape Town, South Africa, we care for up to 18 children between the ages of 6 months and 8 years old, offering them a secure, loving home until they can be re-united with their families, fostered or adopted. Heaven’s Nest is a project of the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Strandfontein and the Fikelela Aids Project. Many of our children have experienced neglect and abuse which have left deep scars. So, as well as providing love, good food, basic education and health care, we also provide counselling and play therapy to all our children. The Confidentiality Clause in our Constitution, protects children from having their HIV status revealed, therefore we generally provide care to all “Children in Need”. Since inception, more than 1350 children have passed through our doors with many of them being placed in improved conditions with family members, foster or adoptive parents. Heaven’s Nest has forged a link with child welfare and social service and accommodates approximately 14 -18 children at any time. We sometimes exceed this limited to accommodate siblings. Children who are accommodated range from the age of 6 months to 8 years of age. Children placed with us have been legally declared to be in need of care and are waiting for social workers to further investigate their circumstances of need – initially 6 weeks, or they are waiting to be placed with appointed adoptive or foster parents and the process takes 6 weeks. Alternatively they are waiting for adoptive parents to be appointed, this process is indeterminate. Many of the children however stay here for much longer than 6 weeks. Some even stay as long as two to four years. The programmes undertaken in these sessions help in the upliftment of self-esteem, confidence and ensure that these children are able to become active, mature, productive adolescence. In our 16 years of experience, we have discovered that many of the children placed at the home have not been exposed to the most basic form of education, with many experiencing difficulties. Their mind have been deprived of the right to basic education with which to stimulate their minds. With great success Heaven’s Nest has been able to be in the service of aiding children for the past sixteen years having been established in 2004.
Heatherdale Children’s Home began in 1929. Since that time, it has evolved and re-focussed its vision to be relevant to the changing world of young people. We are a Level 2 Child and Youth Care Centre accommodating children in need of care. Heatherdale Children’s Home had humble beginnings, operating out of what was an old farmhouse on a spacious piece of ground made available to the church by the late Rev. T.E. Marsh (who had founded Heatherdale’s sister institution, Marsh Memorial Homes, 28 years earlier), and initially catering only for orphaned “coloured” girls. As time went by, the needs of the community changed and Heatherdale responded to these needs, establishing itself as a place of safety for all children at risk from abuse, abandonment or neglect. Heatherdale Children’s Home is a level 2 Child and Youth Care Centre in Athlone, Cape Town. It operates under the auspices of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. For many years, Heatherdale has provided a safe space for vulnerable and at-risk children at risk through its residential programme. We have accommodated up to fifty (50) children, those whose homes are beset with financial difficulties, drug and alcohol problems and/or physical abuse, and who have suffered emotional trauma as a result. Through therapeutic and development programmes Heatherdale has addressed each child’s trauma and equipped them to return to their community and to a normal, healthy and independent life. For the past number of years Heatherdale has accommodated up to fifty children, 25 boys and 24 girls, aged between 5 and 18 years of age. The children are placed in our care by the Commissioner of the Children’s Court, with a social worker testifying that their home environment places them at risk. We offer a range of comprehensive programmes that encompass areas such as life skills training, therapeutic services sporting activities, spiritual development and educational support.
The South African Children’s Home was the first welfare institution established in South Africa. The SA Children’s Home was originally housed on Cape Town’s Long Street before moving to the suburb of Gardens in 1923. Forty-five years later a modern Children’s Home was erected on the same site and this is where the Children’s Home still stands today. Originally known as the ‘Orphan House’ it was founded in 1808 by Mrs Moller, a wealthy Dutch widow, who was assisted in this task by members of the Groote Kerk and the Evangelical Church, two of the oldest churches in South Africa. Mrs Moller dedicated much of her life to establishing the Children’s Home and upon her death she graciously donated the bulk of her estate to her beloved orphanage. Forty-five years later a modern Children’s Home was erected on the same site and this is where the Children’s Home still stands today. Now more than 200 years later, the Children’s Home continues its care for children by providing a secure, friendly, homely environment for its family of 44 boys and girls.
Our community in Khayelitsha is afflicted by the largest HIV/Aids epidemic in the world, an increasing number of orphaned/vulnerable children, and an unemployment that stands at a staggering 54.1% or higher. The vision of Baphumelele is to provide a temporary shelter for vulnerable/orphaned children and young adults with chronic diseases and HIV/Aids, and to provide skills development for the unemployed, early childhood care, alleviation of poverty, and healthcare information to the community in Khayelitsha and surroundings, so that the lives of everyone we touch can become more productive and accepted individuals who make a difference within society. In 1989, Rosalia Mashale “Mama Rosie” to those around her, a trained primary school teacher, moved from the Eastern Cape toKhayelitsha in the Western Cape Province. Rosie was disturbed to see young children going through the rubbish dump in search for food while their parents were away during the day, either at work or in search of work. She responded by taking children into her home, and together with a group of women from the community, began looking after these unsupervised children. After the first week, 36 children had joined their charge. The name given to this project was Baphumelele (pronounced: ba-poo-meh-leh-leh), a Xhosa word meaning “you have progressed”. From these humble beginnings, Baphumelele Educare Centre was founded. Today the centre is an established community crèche and Grade R (preschool) caring for roughly 250 children aged three months to six years. While the Educare Centre had developed a reputation for looking after children, Rosie also felt a calling to reach out to orphaned children in the community. To that end, Baphumelele Children’s Home was created as a place of safety for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children, many of whom have been affected by the HIV/Aids pandemic or have HIV/Aids themselves. Through the hard work, determination, and help of the community and friends overseas, Baphumelele has developed into a thriving community project over the years. In addition to the Children’s Home and Educare Centre, Baphumelele has expanded to include the Adult Respite Care Centre, Child Respite Centre, Hospice in the Home, Child Headed Households, Fountain of Hope, and Rosie’s Bakery/Sewing Project. Mama Rosie is a visionary paradigm-shifter whose leadership and vision continue to grow and shape Baphumelele today.
At Christine Revell Children’s Home, we provide full-time care for up to 49 babies and children from birth to five years of age who have been referred to us by social workers and placed here by order of a children’s court. The children are either neglected, abandoned, abused, orphaned and are accepted at the home irrespective of HIV status, race or gender. We strive to create a warm, friendly and homely environment, but our ultimate aim is to re-unite a child with its parents or the extended family should circumstances permit. Children are also placed into foster care with suitable families in the communities and when the proper legal channels have been followed children can also be adopted. These decisions are always taken with the full involvement of our social worker, the social worker who referred the child to us, the family and children’s courts. Many of the children who arrive at our Home have not had the chance to grow and develop normally. A healthy and nutritious diet, suitable exercise and the mental development of our children are therefore of great importance. With this in mind we run a crèche weekdays from 08:00 to 11:45 where we develop the children mentally, physically, emotionally and socially.

Our vision for our first children’s home, Biggle Corner, was to develop - in partnership with leading experts and specialists - an innovative, residential service specifically designed to meet the needs of children with specialist/high needs (including Autism, Learning Difficulties, challenging behaviours and recovery from trauma). We are absolutely committed to working in an evidence-based and holistic way, based on clearly defined needs, strengths and outcomes for each child in our care. We believe in forming a shared vision for each child, where partnership working is key to ensuring the best possible opportunities for each child and providing the foundations that will support them through transition to permanence in a family environment.
The Durbanville Children's Home opened its doors in 1883 and is celebrating 130 years of care to children in need in 2013. We have 144 children aged from 2 to 18 at our home and are a non-profit, church based residential care home who looks after children in need of care from all communities of the Cape Peninsula. We are recognised as a model for child and youth care in a therapeutic milieu. The Children’s Home receive 32% subsidy from the Government, therefore we are very dependent on local and foreign communities for funds and donations.
Marsh Memorial Homes nurtures children and transforms lives, by providing short term care for children who have experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment. Our programmes strive to rehabilitate and re-unite children with their families or communities of origin, having developed in them the skill necessary for them to develop into confident, productive and responsible adults. This work of transformation begins with Marsh Memorial Homes providing a safe, stable and loving environment for the children in our care. The environment coupled with an intentional life skills programme, along with multidisciplinary therapeutic support and counselling aims to assist children to find healing, rebuild their self-respect and confidence, thus ensuring that when they leave our care they are equipped to achieve their dreams. All children in our care come to us via the children’s court system, the majority have families. Ultimately, our goal is to see all the children happily reunited with their rehabilitated families. In order to achieve this, we work in partnership with the Department of Social Development and a number of Welfare organisations who focus on assisting the families in their local communities and are committed to reuniting families if at all possible. The roots of Marsh Memorial Homes are to be found in the generosity of William Marsh. William Marsh, Born in 1822 in Walsall in Staffordshire, moved to the Cape Colony with his wife Frances, and founded a hardware firm in Cape Town that became extremely successful. Their only son, Thomas Edward (always known by his second name, after his father’s older brother), was born in Cape Town in 1854. After matriculating from the South African College, Edward worked in his father’s business for seven years before responding to a call to the ministry and going to Richmond Methodist College in London to train as a minister. On the 28 August 1901 the Marsh Memorial Homes officially opened their doors on the 12 January 1903 when the first children were admitted. Much has changed over the years, the estate is considerably smaller with portions having been sold to raise funds, expropriated for the building of roads and leased to the Woodside Village Trust. So today on a smaller property the good work started by the Reverend Edward Marsh continues in the present Marsh Memorial Homes, a multicultural child and youth care facility under the auspices of The Methodist Church of Southern Africa.
It is our vision that: “EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO GROW UP IN A LOVING AND RESPONSIBLE FAMILY” Founded as a family-run organisation, at the dawn of South African democracy in 1993, TLC Children's Home is now a board governed, fully B-BBEE compliant, registered Not-For-Profit Child and Youth Care Center (CYCC) with the Department of Social Development. We focus on providing quality attachment based, trauma informed care to the little ones in our home to best address the pre-existing and/or inutero trauma every child invariably comes to us with. We also put significant effort into championing for the right of each child to be placed into a loving and responsible family as rapidly as possible. Our purpose is to provide quality care and nurture to the vulnerable babies and children that are welcomed into our home. We undertake to care for and nurture these babies and children on a full-time basis, within a family-modeled, homely environment, whilst painstakingly pursing their rapid, responsible placement into loving forever families of their own. Our motivation and conviction is that every child has the right to a loving, caring family and that no child should be left in an orphanage. At present TLC cares for up to 34 babies, all of which come to us under the age of 3 years upon admission. Since our inception in 1993, over 900 babies have come to our home. We believe that by providing quality, attachment based care to the little ones in our home and placing them into loving, permanent families, we will see the long-term benefits of providing a quality upbringing to these vulnerable children of our nation.
Hope and Homes for Children was the creation of two extraordinary individuals who believed that every child had the right to grow up in a loving family. Today, the organisation that Mark and Caroline Cook started at their kitchen table in Wiltshire in 1994, is at the forefront of a growing global movement to eliminate the institutional care of children. Our mission is to be the catalyst for the global elimination of institutional care for children and our vision is a world in which children no longer suffer institutional care. In 1994, Mark Cook, a retired British Army officer, read about the plight of a group of children, struggling to survive in Sarajevo’s main orphanage at the height of the Bosnian War. He told his wife Caroline, and within weeks the couple had boarded a plane to the city to see what they could do to help. When they first set eyes on the Bjelave orphanage, the building was in a terrible state. It had sustained hits from mortars and heavy weapons in its exposed position on top of one of the city’s hills. The teenagers who lived there had been left to run wild, living a semi-feral existence in the ruined building and scavenging food and supplies out in the streets. The babies were down in the basement, crammed inside the only warm room in the building. The Cooks visited the orphanage for a week and promised the children that they would find a way to rebuild their home. “In order to keep that promise, we decided to start our own charity to provide homes for orphans of war or disaster”, Mark says. “We wanted to give them hope, hence Hope and Homes for Children.” The Cooks set up an office in a converted hay barn on a farm near their home in Wiltshire and this site remains the headquarters of Hope and Homes for Children today. In the early days, Mark and Caroline’s plan was to create a worldwide network of small, well-run orphanages but, by listening to the children that they were trying to help, they soon realised that they were on the wrong track. It did not matter what race, colour or creed the children were, or whether they were living in an orphanage, on the streets on in the sewers, whenever they were asked what they really wanted, their answer was always the same, “Please, please find me a family.” Mark asked one small boy on the streets of Khartoum what he thought a family and a home were and his answer was “Love”. That response was to have a defining influence on the future focus of Hope and Homes for Children. “We had presumed that what these children needed was food, a roof over their heads, a safe place to sleep and an education”, Caroline says, “but the children themselves guided us to their heart of our mission – they desperately wanted and needed to be loved. “Over the years we have visited numerous orphanages in many countries. Some were awful and smelled so bad that we felt sick and wanted to leave; others were better, being reasonably equipped and staffed. But the one thing we never found in any orphanage was the feeling of unconditional love that is at the heart of a caring family. “Love became the key to our work and we have quite unashamedly focused on and talked about it ever since.”
In 1869, the Reverend Thomas Bowman Stephenson saw some children living rough under the arches of Waterloo Station Instead of walking by, he stopped to listen to their stories. Then he worked out the most practical way to help. Stephenson was a Methodist minister from the North East of England. He was also passionate about social justice. So when he moved to London, he challenged the Methodist Church to take action to help children living on the streets. Stephenson’s work led to the creation of the National Children’s Home (NCH). In 1994, we became NCH Action for Children. We’ve been Action for Children since 2008. Our vision is that every child and young person has a safe and happy childhood, and the foundations they need to thrive. We put children at the heart of everything we do. That includes our mission and values. They’re our blueprint for the way we work. We protect and support children and young people. We do this by providing practical and emotional care and support. We make sure their voices are heard. And we campaign to bring lasting improvements to their lives.
Goodwill Children's Homes is a registered UK charity that works with our partner Society registered in South India as 'Goodwill Children's Homes Charitable Society'. Goodwill has been supporting the care and education of destitute and orphaned children in southern India since 1976. We provide a loving home and a meaningful education to many destitute children. We run three residential homes, a primary school and a Tribal Outreach Programme (TORP). Most Goodwill children come from the tribal communities living in the mountain ranges of the Palani Hills. We look after children who have either been orphaned or come from families that are simply too poor to provide essential shelter, food, and education. Goodwill is able to provide them with a loving home and the life chances that their families cannot.Thandigudi is home to children aged between 5 and 11. This was the first home built by Goodwill over 30 years ago. Thandigudi has its own primary school where all the children attend. Pattiveeranpatti is our girls' home located at the foot of the mountains and house girls aged between 11 and 18 who attend the local school. Sanarpatti is our newest site, and home to boys aged between 11 and 18 who also attend a local secondary school. TORP was started in 2002 with the aim of educating tribal children while they remain with their own families and communities. We either assist the poorest families to keep their children in education, or for those children who do not wish to continue with academic study, we offer skills training in trades such as tailoring and electrical wiring that will provide them with a living and benefit their communities.
Timeout is a family run organisation, established with the aim of making a real difference to the lives of children with complex needs. The first Timeout Home was opened in Ripponden in 2004. Timeout now has 12 homes: 8 in the North West and 4 in West Yorkshire. We have developed an integrated, therapeutic, evidence-based approach to care that has enabled Timeout to become a first-call company for many local authorities. It was decided very early that to provide the kind of care we knew young people needed, we would only offer solo or dual occupancy in our homes with a minimum of 1:1 care. Each home is designed specifically to nurture young people, so they can learn how to live a positive, independent life. A central part of the therapeutic development of a young person is their education. Although we strive to keep a child’s placement in mainstream schools, Timeout set up 2 specialist schools for those who have been excluded or require more detailed support. Our schools provide tailored educational programs for every pupil. The excellent quality of our schooling has led to local authorities taking day places for pupils unable to cope in mainstream education. An organisation can never be a true parent, however it can apply the values and principles of good parenting. Our aim is to achieve this through promoting an awareness of a young person’s perspective, and by never losing sight, within the ‘big picture’, of the small actions that make a real difference to young children’s daily lives.

Eden Schools were established in Gauteng over 30 years ago. The Chief Executive of Eden, Mr Allan Zulberg, co-founded Eden in 1974. He played a leading role in the establishment of Midrand University and Educor. He was an executive director of Educor. He also served as Chief Executive of King David Schools for a time. Mr Zulberg taught Mathematics and Physical Science for many years, and also served as headmaster of Eden Lyndhurst. Eden Schools operate in Lyndhurst, Randburg and Durban. Its head office is in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg. Mr Joe Khouri is Chief Operating Officer, an educator, past principal and lecturer at Wits University. Mr Allan Fehler is the group's Financial Director. In 2007 Eden opened in Durban. The school was previously managed by Crawfordschools. The school operates a Pre-Primary, Preparatory, Middle School and College High School in Glenmore.

Rondebosch Boys’ High School was founded in 1897 in response to the pressing need for a boys’ school in the growing suburb of Rondebosch. From humble beginnings in a rented church hall with an initial enrolment of only eight boys, the High School has flourished under the leadership of ten Headmasters. A newly constructed building in Campground Road was occupied in 1898 and served through to 1948 when the much expanded facilities were opened next to the Canigou Estate – these are the High School buildings still in use today. The Campground building is now used exclusively by the Prep School. The first Headmaster, Mr Robert Ramage, initially accommodated a few boarders in his own home and in 1900 had the foresight to purchase the nearby Canigou homestead, which became the much loved boarding house. With Canigou came extensive grounds, which have been developed into the sports fields on the school side of the Black River that runs through the premises. During the 1980s, appeals were made to the then government for Rondebosch to be opened to all races. This permission was denied and it was only from 1990 that Rondebosch was allowed to do so. Headmaster Chris Murison, himself a former pupil of the school, said, ‘Rondebosch boys must emerge as often as possible from their comfortable cocoon, both to render the community service their privileged position makes them capable of and also, for their own sakes, to become more aware, from first-hand experience, of the world they live in.’ Generations of Rondebosch boys have been fortunate to fall under the tutelage and guidance of excellent teachers, mentors and coaches. These include Headmasters Sydney ‘Dad’ Mason and Wally Mears, masters Arthur Jayes and Tickey de Jager and the much revered Prof I de V ‘Tinkie’ Heyns among many other legendary and much loved figures. Mr Mason’s self-imposed task was keeping in contact with all Old Boys and staff who were serving during the two World Wars. He was instrumental in helping to raise funds for the building of the Rondebosch War Memorial Library – now the Reeler Music Centre – and the Memorial Hall, which is the symbolic and spiritual center of the School. Over time, the initial basic school facilities have been expanded and enhanced with further boarding in Mason House, the multipurpose Mears Centre, two swimming and water polo pools, squash and tennis courts, cricket pavilion, Reeler Music Centre, Chris Murison Center (library and IT), Art Center, Technology Room, Carleton Lloyd Stand, hockey Astroturfs (shared with WPCC) and several pavilions. Most of these facilities were funded by former pupils in appreciation of the education which they received at Rondebosch. Old Boys of the school have excelled in varied pursuits in science, business, law, academia, culture and sport. Alan Cormack who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1979 for the work he did in developing the CAT scan, Reverend Peter Storey served as President of the South African Council of Churches and was chaplain to Nelson Mandela while he was imprisoned on Robben Island, the world-famous painter Gregoire Boonzaier, Chief Justice Michael Corbett who inaugurated President Nelson Mandela, cartoonist Jonathan ‘Zapiro’ Shapiro, botanist Lyall Watson and almost 70 international sportsmen all attended Rondebosch.
Willowridge High is a young school with young ideas and many talented young people who have excelled in an environment which has nurtured enthusiasm, friendship and a pioneering spirit. We have built this ethos on the lives of four prominent South Africans who were associated with Pretoria East and the early development of the Transvaal. Our four school houses are named after them and our house badges are extracts from their original family crests. The first of these, in historical sequence, Harry Struben, is remembered as a pioneer on the gold fields. In 1860, he started a transport business between the old ZAR capital and Natal. With the profits from this business, he bought a farm, The Willows, at that time far to the east of Pretoria. As early as the start of 1985 a Vigilance Committee was elected at a meeting of prospective parents. Having been named the watchdogs, they monitored the progress of the new school, while the buildings started taking shape on the site that once had been a farm. It was due to their efforts that the school cottage and the trees, which give our schools its restful country atmosphere, were saved from the bulldozer. The Committee’s activities were, however, also directed at creating an ethos for their new school and establishing a fundamental philosophy. Our school opened its doors on Wednesday 7 January 1987 to welcome the first 187 pupils in Forms One and Two. During the first term, the name Willowridge High School became official and a badge needed to be designed.

South African education has seen many transformations since 1994. However, despite a substantial allocation of the national budget to education, the increasing demand for high quality schools and teachers remains insatiable. Despite making progress in creating equal opportunities for learners, government still faces great challenges in providing education at an acceptable standard. Understandably, their efforts are targeted where the situation is most dire. However, this creates a vacuum in terms of facilities and standards at the lower to middle of the market, as well as for new campuses in the more affluent areas. This has led to the private sector increasingly playing its part. Section 29 of the South African Constitution enshrines and protects the valuable role of independent schools in this regard. Against this background, we aim to develop numerous independent schools across South Africa and the rest of Africa. Development of independent schools creates opportunities in public schools for new enrolments and saves the state significant capital outlay and running costs. A joint venture between various investors and Old Mutual’s Schools Fund will accelerate access to quality education. It will also support government in addressing South Africa’s educational needs in the lower-income market under the brand of Meridian Schools. Curro will expand its independent school group through new developments and acquisitions. This strategy will not only support the public sector but will provide parents with additional options for their children’s education, as independent schools increasingly improve educational standards – this will positively impact the development of the South African population and economic growth.
The Diocesan School of the Diocese of Cape Town - for boys only, normal in those times - was established in 1849 by Bishop Robert Gray, and opened its doors in Maynier’s Cottage in the grounds of the Bishop’s residence, Protea, now called Bishopscourt. Its object was ‘to give a sound Education to the Youth of the Colony’, conducted on the principles of the English Church. The first Principal was the Revd HM White, an English clergyman. Gray clearly had it in mind that this school would be different from the other grammar schools that he was establishing during the first years of his time in South Africa. He envisaged a lower school (boys aged 10 to 17) and an upper department (boys older than that) and when in 1874 the University of the Cape of Good Hope was instituted, university classes were set up as part of the Collegiate School, this was clearly in line with Gray’s orginal intentions. As the formal name of the school is quite a mouthful, the school has been referred to as ‘Bishops’ (the school of the Bishop) from the very beginning. Founded in 1953 on a farm in the Randburg district, the College today is encircled by the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. John Carpenter, Town Clerk of London in the reign of Henry V, was famous as the author of the Liber Albus, a compilation of the laws, customs and privileges of the City, the memory of which had been threatened by the depredations of the plague. Property left on Carpenter’s death in 1442 was devoted to the education of four boys who were attached to the Chapel of the Guildhall, whose library Carpenter had helped to found. After the suppression of the Chapel in 1546, these ‘Carpenter’s Children’ led a wandering existence, being educated for a time at Tonbridge School. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the accumulated funds greatly exceeded the cost of their education. Warren Stormes Hale, a future Lord Mayor, worked for the creation of a permanent school. In his negotiations in the City, Hale drew support from progressive educationalists such as George Birkbeck, and, above all, the Whig Lord Chancellor, Lord Brougham, a radical patrician with the vision and drive to push the necessary Act through Parliament in 1834. In the Act, the Corporation of London took over the Carpenter Estates and created a School Committee as the governing body. Unusually, there was to be no religious test for either boys or masters. The curriculum laid down by the Committee broke with the customary monopoly of classics, and specified science and a range of modern languages, taught by native speakers, and Hebrew. The new School, a neo-Gothic structure designed by J B Bunning for 400 boys, opened its doors in Milk Street in 1837. King’s was founded by royal charter in 1829 as the junior department of King's College of London, and was originally located in Strand. During the early Victorian period, the school grew in numbers and reputation. Teachers included the artist John Sell Cotman and the poet Gabriele Rossetti, who taught Italian (his son, the famous Dante Gabriel Rossetti, joined King’s in 1837). King's was progressive in its curriculum and appointed its first science master in 1855, at a time where very few schools taught science. The first headmaster, John Major, served the school between 1831 and 1866, and during this time 99 King's pupils appear in the Dictionary of National Biography. In 1897, King's moved to its present site in Wimbledon and the junior school opened on the same campus in 1912. In World War I, many letters were written to the school, including some from the Battle of the Somme. During World War II, the Great Hall was damaged by bomb shrapnel; some damage can still be seen today. The archive collects and preserves records relating to the school’s history from its foundation to the present day. The archive is a fantastic resource, and through the hard work of our wonderful volunteers, provides a fascinating insight into the rich heritage of King's. In 2019, it was renamed the Bryan Stokes Archive, in recognition of the ex-teacher and long-serving school archivist who was a member of the King's community for over 60 years.
The Godolphin and Latymer School is a day school for 800 girls aged between 11 and 18. It began in 1861 as the Godolphin School, a boys’ boarding school set in fields near the River Thames in Hammersmith. Our main buildings date from this time. The boys’ school did not thrive, however, and in 1905 a new independent day school for girls was created on the same site. Support from the Latymer foundation resulted in a new name: the Godolphin and Latymer School. Following the end of the Second World War and the transformational Education Act of 1944, Dame Joyce Bishop (Head from 1935 to 1963) took the decision that Godolphin and Latymer should become a state grammar school. Thus, it was free to offer places to bright girls, totally regardless of their parents’ background or income. Dame Joyce’s vision resonates strongly with the school today: ‘Each member of this new community of schools has its own function to perform, its own gifts to offer. For us, it is to foster scholarship and sound learning, to follow knowledge like a shooting star and to offer humbly an imaginative understanding of our fellow creatures born of this pursuit of wisdom, a charity that rejoices in the truth. Surely all this must continue to flourish and to gain fresh vitality as we open wider our window of experience and share with all schools the task of educating the nation.’ In 1977 grammar school status was removed from many London schools and Godolphin and Latymer reverted to the independent sector. Subsequent years have seen a growth in numbers, much modernisation in educational outlook, and the imaginative development of our Hammersmith site. We enjoy our history, but our eyes always look towards the future!
North London Collegiate School was founded in April 1850 by Frances Mary Buss in the family home at 46 Camden Street, Camden Town. All the family assisted with the school, including her brother Septimus and her father, R.W. Buss, who illustrated Dickens' novels and whose paintings now hang in the Buss Room, in the Old House at Canons. La Comunità Mamma-Bimbo accoglie donne italiane e straniere, gestanti o con figli minori che vivono situazioni di violenza, alta conflittualità familiare e forme di marginalità sociale che possono avere pesanti ripercussioni sulla salute psicofisica del bambino e della donna. Offre protezione e sostegno al nucleo mamma-bimbo, consente l’osservazione e il supporto della funzione genitoriale. Oltre al percorso comunitario si progetta la fase di reinserimento e autonomia del nucleo. Laddove possibile (e mai nei casi di violenza intrafamiliare), vengono attivati percorsi di coinvolgimento dei papà o interventi di sostegno alla cogenitorialità. La comunità promuove attività di supporto specifico alla genitorialità come la psicomotricità o gruppi di confronto su tematiche comuni alle mamme presenti in struttura.

Taking our past into the future with Carolina Reviglio! Carolina enjoyed a carefree childhood in the Piedmont countryside. With many cousins and friends, the passion for culture was instilled from an early age. Surrounded by beauty and art in the family mansion Cimena, expertly curated by her grandmother namesake, Carolina. On the paternal side of the family, her Venetian grandmother was equally influential. The unique character and rich culture of Venice, epitomizes Carolina. While travelling often, she feels most at home, in the isles of Venice. Schooled in Italy and the United States, lived in provinces throughout the length of Italy, Carolina considers herself truly Italian, with an international vision. “My country is rich in heritage, but poor in the pocket to keep it so. It saddens me to see so many buildings in a state of disrepair.” She has honed the skills of renovation and interiors of historic buildings, since 1987. Learning by trial and error, spurned on by failure and ultimate success, Carolina has grown and prospered. Now is the time to give back. Helping artisans of all disciplines to find work and ply their trade with pride. Matching projects to professionals and vice versa. As Heritage Doyenne, Carolina’s primary contribution to this unique initiative, is to encourage the participation of Heritage Ambassadors.
